To get to this plaque drive to West Montgomery Road in SW Bexar county where Straus Medina Road forms a junction with W Montgomery Rd. Turn onto Strause Medina Rd and follow it until it divides at a fork in the road. Keep to the right side fork and continue for about 0.9 mile. The cemetery will be on your right side when you get to it.
The facts from Hendrick Arnold's Texas historical marker (WM1510Z), which is the prominent gravestone in this small cemetery, tell he was born in Kentucky in 1804, participated in the Siege of Bexar from December 5-10, 1835, and died November 9, 1849. From this we learn he lived 45 years and fought at the Siege of Bexar as a Texas soldier.
There is another State of Texas marker at this cemetery that relates to this being a historical cemetery. This was from the Texas Historical Commission related to historical cemeteries. The THC Atlas only lists a cemetery titled "Arnold Cemetery" yet the physical plaque at the gate into this cemetery states the cemetery is the "Medina Ranch Cemetery". The THC Atlas shows no listing for a Medina Ranch Cemetery even though the data describing the Arnold Cemetery match up for this location.
The plaque for the"Medina Ranch Cemetery" reads as follows:
"Medina Ranch Cemetery
1849
Burial place of Hendrick Arnold, who was given this land by the Republic of Texas for his serviced as a soldier. Served as a scout and participant in the siege and capture of San Antonio December 3-10, 1835. Was a member of Deaf Smith's spy company at the Battle of San Jacinto, Died of cholera in 1849."
This sign of history tells that Mr. Arnold was a soldier for the duration of the Texas Republic and that he was there at San Jacinto were Santa Anna surrendered and Texas became a Republic. He also was part of the Deaf Smith's company. Sadly, we lear the cause of Arnold's death was by catching the disease of cholera, an intestinal bacteria that can cause death in severe cases!
This land making up the cemetery and the average surrounding this whole area containing the Straus Media Road was Hendrick Arnolds payment in land by the Republic of Texas for his military service.
