Consisting of an archipelago of islets off the coast of Cap Corse, the Finocchiarola islands take their name from the Corsican finochju, fennel. These rocky coasts are part of the wild landscape which forges the unique character of the whole of the Cap Corse.

Îles Finocchiarola

Credits

Terra, le plus proche de la côte (200 m) ;
Mezzu, l'îlot central ;

Finocchiarola Islands

The Finocchiarola Islands form an uninhabited archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea. They are all close to the north-east coast of Cape Corsica, in the Rogliano commune, between the bay of Tamarone (to the south) and that of Santa Maria (to the north), and consist of three desert islets:

Terra, the closest to the coast (200 m);
Mezzu, the central islet;
Finuchjarola, the largest, highest and most offshore of the islets (500 m); it culminates at 27 m at the ruined tower.

History
In 1594, a shore tower was built at the highest point of the largest islet. It was intended for the defence of the Corsican Cape during the Genoese occupation and is now in a state of ruin.

The two largest islets are now the property of the Conservatoire du littoral, and the third falls within its intervention zone.

Ecology
The archipelago has been part of the Finocchiarola Islands Nature Reserve since 1987.

The reserve was mainly set up to preserve Audouin's gull, an endemic species.
The islets have a very particular fauna and flora. They take their name from a characteristic plant, the wild fennel, finochju in Corsican.
