The Fountain Inn was the first hotel built in South Australia. It was built by the whalers of Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor. When originally erected in 1837, by whalers, the building had three rooms and a cellar. It was licensed as a hotel from 1847-63. Had a shingle roof at first, but later was clad in corrugated iron sheeting.
