"Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born Friedrich Stowasser, (15 December 1928 – 19 February 2000) was an Austrian artist and architect. He was best known for the colorful buildings he designed and he championed a people-friendly and environmentally friendly construction method.

As a child, Hundertwasser was educated at the Montessori school, where his remarkable approach to colors was noticed by the teachers. In 1948 Hundertwasser studied for three months at the Vienna Art Academy, but otherwise he was self-taught. When he discovered in 1949 that the Slavic word sto or sta means a hundred, he came up with his pseudonym.

In the early 1950s he began to delve into architecture. He also worked in the field of applied art designing flags, stamps, coins and posters. His best known flag is the Koru Flag, an alternative flag for New Zealand. In addition to stamps for the Austrian Post, he designed stamps for the Cape Verde Islands and for the United Nations on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Hundertwasser was almost unique in his artistic work, but influences from other artists can be detected. The influence of Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) can be seen in his architecture, especially in Hundertwasser's organic forms and tile and mosaic work. He was also inspired by the work of the Austrians Egon Schiele (1890–1918) and Gustav Klimt (1862–1918). Hundertwasser was fascinated by spiral shapes and called straight lines "godless and immoral". "

Sadly he died a few months before the building was finished.
