Chrankshaft from Motala Verkstad.
This is a part of af chrankshaft belonging to a marine engine. The shaft was produced at the Motala Verkstad in 1954. The picture clearly shows the whole shaft intended for AB Götaverken in Gothenburg.
A complete chrankshaft as can be seen in the picture, weighs nearly 70 tons, this part is 35 tons. Motala Verkstad has been producing chrankshafts since the company was formed in 1822. In 1936 the following could be read: "Complete and finished, entirely forged chrankshafts as well as whole or partly constructed chrankshafts are, for the workshop, exceedingly important products."
During the 1970:s Motala Verkstad was one of the world´s leading producers of ship chrankshafts. By 1979 the company had delivered its last.
This particular chrankshaft was donated to Motala city in 1955 by The Motala Rotary Club. Since then it has been displayed on the harbour pier. In 2005, on the initiative of AB Göta kanalbolag, the chrankshaft was moved to its present position.
