Red Cloud was born on the central plains in what is now the state of Nebraska. At a young age he distinguished himself as a horseman and warrior in numerous skirmishes with neighboring tribes. He rose to notoriety among many of the tribes of Sioux Indians when he led a large band of warriors against the U.S. Army in the late 1860s. The U.S. Army was attempting to protect a new road, known as the Bozeman Road, which crossed the Indian territory. These confrontations, all of which were won by Red Cloud and his band, became known as the Red Cloud Wars.

Although known primarily as a ruthless warrior in his early years, Red Cloud became much more diplomatic later on. Leading delegations of multiple tribal leaders, he represented their positions at various treaty negotiations. He even made several trips east to Washington DC and other cities meeting with President U. S. Grant and other notables. Having risen to prominence, he was sought after for photographs and achieved the distinction of being the “most photographed” American Indian leader of that time.

Today, several places have been named after Red Cloud including a city in Nebraska. He has also appeared on a U.S. postage stamp.
