Loch Leven is a large body of freshwater situated on the flatlands of the old county of Kinross-shire, now Perth & Kinross. The town of Kinross lies close to the western side of the irregular oval shaped loch, and it is here that it is most visited.
The loch is a National Nature Reserve and features a visitor centre at Vane Farm on the south side. A 13 mile cycling and walking trail called the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, circumnavigates the loch on a good gravel path. The northern side at Burleigh Sands and the southern at Vane Farm provide the best views of the loch, the eastern side of the trail runs through birch and pine woods, and the south-western part between the visitor centre and Kinross runs between narrow hedgerows.
There are seven islands of varying size on the loch, the largest being St Serf's Island to the south-east. Closer to Kinross is Castle Island, home to Lochleven Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567.
The loch lies just east of the M90 motorway between Edinburgh and Perth, and can be seen from it, with the high escarpment of the Lomond Hills to the east and Benarty Hill to the south also providing views of the entire body of water.
