Strathfinella Hill is a sprawling, heavily forested area on the south-eastern edge of the Grampian Mountains of Scotland. The hill overlooks the Howe of the Mearns to the south, and is cut off from the higher moorland of the Grampians by Strath Finella and Drumtochty Glen to the north. The actual summit is a fairly level area at 414 metres within the forest and is marked by this trig pillar which is in good condition albeit without any view at all as it is situated in a small alcove under the dark canopy of pine trees.
STEEPNESS: Forest tracks take a lengthy twisting route up the hill, avoiding the steeper parts.
TERRAIN: Forest tracks in good condition, with a short grassy area which can be muddy when wet, on the summit.
ACCESSIBILITY: From the South Drumtochty Car Park to the north-east. Just over two miles of twisting tracks eventually reach the summit.
NAVIGATION: The unsignposted route to the summit from the car park takes a winding route around Black Hill to the east, before a small section of path heads north to reach the straight track which heads in a west-south-westerly direction over the summit. On the highest point of the track, a cleared area heads north with a faint path, after following this for around two hundred yards the pillar appears on the left within a small alcove.
DANGER: Little apart good map reading to navigate the maze of forest tracks.
