Spitalfields Market was first licenced in 1682 during the reign of King Charles II. It was entirely rebuilt during the period 1883-1893. The market continued in these late-Victorian buildings until closure and relocation to Leyton in 1986. Parts of the old market were demolished, or extensively modernised, and some parts survive. The south-eastern block, facing onto Brushfield Street, dates from 1889 and survives intact. In 1930, part of the building, in the centre of the block, was converted by architects FCR Palmer and J Reeve Young for use as a bank premises by the National Provincial Bank. The former bank features stone fronting to the ground floor and tall, rounded windows and doorways with carved keystones. The keystones have a floral design, which I believe represent sugar cane.

I do not know when the bank branch closed, but it would have been at the time of the closure of the market in 1986 or, more likely, earlier. Since regeneration of the former market buildings, the bank premises have housed a succession of businesses and are currently home to Rapha, a combination of cafe and sports goods shop. This appeared to be closed at the time of Waymarking.
