This telephone box stands in front of a short line of cottages, close to the church of St Mary the Virgin. It is a cast iron kiosk of the K6 type, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, placed here sometime in or after 1936. The K6 was the first telephone box to be installed extensively in the English countryside.
The box no longer contains a telephone and the door has been removed. Instead it is home to a defibrillator. The panels below the crown no longer say ‘TELEPHONE’, but now read ‘DEFIBRILLATOR’. It is maintained in very good condition.
The first telephone kiosk to be converted to house a defibrillator was in Glendaruel, Scotland, where in 2011 a local Girl Guide won a competition to think of a new use for the redundant village telephone box. Many have since been converted to this meritable new purpose.
