The marker says, "In 1701, William Penn granted 30,000 acres of land to a group of Welsh settlers who were attracted to the area by the iron on Iron Hill. An iron mining and smelting industry grew up around both Iron and Chestnut hills and continued until 1891 when it was no longer feasible to mine the ore."
