The origin of the Congregational church in Brattleboro dates back to 1814 when the Brattleborough Village Meeting House Society organized to construct a church. The first Congregational church was constructed in 1815 and dedicated in 1816. In 1842 this church was dismantled and the present Centre Congregational Church was dedicated on January 11, 1843. The church sustained severe damage due to a storm 1864. It was repaired and remodeled to its present appearance with an Italianate Revival style central tower.
The symmetrical, west facing façade of the Centre Congregational Church has a projecting tower with a central double door entrance. Above is a fan window which is recessed within an arch. The multi-tiered tower has in the following order: a large stained glass window, a pair of smaller windows, a four sided clock with Roman numerals, a belfry with louvered windows, an octagonal steeple on an octagonal base that has narrow windows on each side.
The main block of the church has a gable roof and a pair of auxiliary entrances flanking the main entrance and rectangular windows on the second level. The north side is five bays wide with rectangular windows on the lower and upper levels. The south side is four bays wide with rectangular windows on the lower and upper levels. The fifth bay is joined to a separate building. A two story high east wing was added in 1854.
Centre Congregational Church is a contributing building to the Brattleboro Downtown Historic District of the National Register of Historic Places. A long description is found on Item 7 page 10 of the NRHP narrative.
