A granite column with a bust of the Norwegian poet and playwright Henrik Ibsen in front of Alexandra Hotell. The bust is located next to another famous Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien on March 20, 1928 and died on May 23, 1906 in Christiania.
He actually started out learning as a pharmacist, but his interest in writing ended up becoming his profession. He made contact with the theater world and was a literary and theater critic. His first play was a failure but already the second play, the fairytale comedy Kæmpehøien, was played at the theater. Henrik Ibsen then became a "dramatic writer" at the Norwegian Theater in Bergen.
Ibsen was a contemporary playwright and put issues under debate. With the play "A Doll's House" he got his international breakthrough. It gained enormous importance for the women's cause struggle all over the world and is probably the world's most played drama in modern times.
Ibsen wrote a total of 26 plays and about 300 poems.
