Corfield coat of arms above a memorial tablet to Revd Frederick Corfield (d.1883), Vicar of Shirley, in St Michael's church. He was descended from the Shropshire line of the Corfield family.

The inscription on the plaque below reads:

BORN JULY 10th 1821, DIED APRIL 12th 1883.
YOUNGEST SON OF WILLIAM WILMOT CORFIELD, ESQ,
OF PENRYN COUNTY CORNWALL,
AND DESCENDED FROM AN ANCIENT SHROPSHIRE FAMILY,
HE MARRIED JANUARY 9th 1845, SARAH WELLER,
YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF GEORGE CHANNER ESQ, OF SUTTON, MIDDLESEX.
HE WAS RECTOR OF TEMPLECRONE, COUNTY DONEGAL,
FROM 1849 TO 1866.
RECTOR OF HEANOR IN THIS COUNTY FROM 1866 TO 1879.
AND VICAR OF THIS PARISH FROM THAT DATE TO THE TIME OF HIS DEATH.
HIS EARNEST PIETY AND BEAUTY OF CHARACTER ENDEARED
HIM TO ALL WHO KNEW HIM.

"The surname Corfield was first found in Shropshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, having prevailed over King Harold, granted most of Britain to his many victorious Barons. He called the census the Domesday Book, indicating that those holders registered would hold the land until the end of time. Hence, conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the village and lands of Corfham of the river Corve, held by Earl Roger, a Norman Baron, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. The holding later became known as Corfield or Corfhull. Corfe Castle is a ruinous castle in the village and civil parish named Corfe Castle, Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century and is today protected as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument."
