A square copper village pump standing on a brick base.
The handle of the pump moves but no longer works for that there is now a push button next to it to get a jet of water.
-----
"The old village pump was already there in 1907, as can be seen in old photographs. Perhaps it disappeared from the heart of the village with the arrival of the waterworks. It was restored in 2004 with a copper replica. That was a gift from the Rotary Gorssel during the reconstruction of the Main Street. On his 'hat' a plaque with an adapted stanza from 'The Well' by the famous poet Ida Gerhardt. She lived for a long time in Eefde, part of the then municipality of Gorssel.
"Make the well pump sing
What slept deep in the earth
in the daylight came leaping
the clear water deep."
In May 2011, on the initiative of Mr. Henk van Dort and the village council, a second appropriate poem by Ida Gerhardt was unveiled. It is beautifully chiseled into a stone at the base of the pump.
"When the swallow builds on the beams,
The stork unfolds its widest flight,
The cuckoo in the willows cannot keep silent...
Kiss the happiness entrusted to thee!"
This poem fits the month of May and also expresses the good life in the village."
