Born in Danielsville, Nov. 1, 1815. Long became a highly educated doctor and a very skilled surgeon.
Doctor Long was just beginning to practice in Jefferson when he reached the conclusion that ether may make surgery painless. On March 30, 1842, the world's first painless operation became a reality when Doctor Long carefully removed a cyst from the neck of James Venable.
