His Findagrave page indicates that he was George Mann Cook, "G.M." The family name, "Cook", is on the plinth, and the inscription indicates that Mother Nature chose an unusual method of sending him to the grave:

G.N. Cook

Born
May 7, 1861,

Killed by Lightning
Aug. 10, 1906.

---

In love he lived,
In peace he died,
His life was craved,
But God denied.
