En 1926, la famille de Harenne offre les ruines d'Orval et les terres avoisinantes à l'Ordre de Cîteaux, pour que la vie monastique y soit restaurée.
Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard, abbé du monastère de Sept-Fons (dans l'Allier), accepte la responsabilité de la fondation, et envoie à Orval un groupe de moines, noyau de la nouvelle communauté.
L'œuvre gigantesque de la reconstruction est entreprise par Dom Marie-Albert van der Cruyssen, un Gantois, moine de l'abbaye de la Trappe. Très vite, un nouveau monastère, construit selon les plans de l'architecte Henry Vaes, s'élève sur les fondations mêmes du monastère du 18e siècle. En 1936, Orval devient autonome et Dom Marie-Albert en est élu abbé.
En 1948, la reconstruction s'achève ; le 8 septembre a lieu la consécration solennelle de l'église. Peu après, Dom Marie-Albert démissionne de sa charge abbatiale. Sa mission est accomplie. Il meurt en 1955. Avec lui se termine la page la plus récente de l'histoire d'Orval. Les années qui suivent appartiennent à l'actualité.

Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard, abt van Sept-Fons (in het Franse departement Allier), neemt de verantwoordelijkheid voor de nieuwe stichting op zich. Hij zendt een groep monniken naar Orval; zij zullen de kern van de nieuwe gemeenschap vormen.
De heropbouw van het klooster wordt een reusachtige onderneming. Dom Marie-Albert van der Cruyssen, Gentenaar en monnik van La Trappe, zet zijn schouders onder deze taak. Men laat architect Henry Vaes een nieuw klooster uittekenen dat moet opgetrokken worden op de fundamenten van de achttiende-eeuwse abdij. In 1936 wordt Orval een zelfstandige abdij; Dom Marie-Albert wordt tot abt verkozen.
In 1948 de bouwwerken beëindigd worden ; op 8 september van dat jaar wordt de kerk plechtig ingewijd. Kort daarop geeft Dom Marie-Albert zijn ontslag als abt. Zijn taak is volbracht. Hij sterft in 1955. Met hem wordt de laatste bladzijde van de recente geschiedenis van Orval omgedraaid. Wat daarop volgt is nog te jong om geschiedenis te heten.

The enormous task of reconstruction was undertaken by Dom Marie-Albert van der Cruyssen, from Ghent, a monk of the abbey of La Trappe. Very quickly a new monastery built according to the plans of the architect Henry Vaes, rose on the same foundations as those of the 18th Century monastery. In 1936, Orval became an autonomous abbey and Dom Marie-Albert was elected Abbot.
In 1948, the rebuilding was complete and on the 8th September the church was solemnly consecrated. Shortly afterwards Dom Marie-Albert resigned as Abbot ; his task had been accomplished. He died in 1955, and with him, the most recent page of Orval's history is turned. The years which follow belong to the present.
