Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was a novelist, painter and American socialite who was married to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Though she only published one novel, her diaries and their lives became the basis for some of her husbands books. In her time, her art was not taken seriously, though over time her art has garnered a higher appreciation.
Her name was the inspiration to the popular Nintendo Game Series: The Legend of Zelda. She has been likened to Marilyn Monroe and Princess Di due to her short tragic life. There is also a Museum in her home state of Alabama in honor of her and her husband.
Originally Zelda and her husband F. Scott Fitzgerald (who died 7 years earlier) were buried at the Rockville Union Cemetery, however in 1975, their daughter was able to petition to have their original decision to not be buried at St. Mary's overturned. There is a vertical stone with their names and dates and a horizontal stone with the quote:
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past" - The Great Gatsby
Along with F. Scott, there are other generations of the Fitzgerald family buried nearby including their daughter.
