The Toy of the Wind 'Veleta', a mobile sculpture designed and built in 1990 by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique, appears again in its original location, the Arrieta roundabout, in the municipality of Haría, fully restored thanks to the maintenance work carried out. by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the Department of Public Works directed by Saray Rodríguez.


The Minister of Public Works traveled this morning to the northern municipality to be present during the installation of "this spectacular and heavy sculpture painted in red that moves slowly and indicates the direction of the wind, whose last restoration was carried out 13 years ago, after the damage suffered by the storm Delta ".


“More than a decade later, the Mobile Park of the Cabildo de Lanzarote disassembled, last June, the Toy of the Wind of Arrieta, for again showing damage to its mobile structure that was rusted and barely moved, rebuilt it and From this Friday, February 16, it returns and looks completely restored in its original location ”, explained the counselor.

The maintenance work has had a cost for the Cabildo de Lanzarote of about 10,300 euros and has consisted of the reconstruction of the cones and the lower rudder, the moving parts, the adaptation and maintenance of the support shaft of the moving elements and, among other minor repairs, the rest of the toy has been polished and painted.


The works carried out by the Cabildo have had an execution period of 5 months and have had the advice of the retired worker of the Cabildo, welder and some of the hands that César Manrique used to build this Toy of the Wind in 1990, Salvador Hernández, and their supervision by the César Manrique Foundation.
