The oldest part of the Château was built in the 15th century by Foulques d´Agoult, on the ruins of a 12th century fortress.
From 1526, Louis d´Agoult-Montauban and his wife, Blanche de Lévis-Ventadour, had the Renaissance wing erected with remarkable unity of style.
At the end of the 16th century, the building became the property of the Créqui-Lesdiguières, staying at the Château de La Tour d´Aigues. From that time until 1789, the Château was occupied only by the stewards who managed the land. After the French Revolution, a period during which it escaped destruction, the Château passed into the hands of various owners, interested above all in land management and who abandoned the Château. At the end of the 19th century, the Château-Vieux fell into ruins, the Renaissance wing which had been transformed into a barn, also served as a refuge for vagabonds and passing gypsies.

In 1920, the Castle was going to be auctioned off to serve as a stone quarry. It was providentially discovered and acquired by Robert Laurent-Vibert, an industrialist from Lyon, owner of Pétroles Hahn, but also a great scholar, normalien, associate professor of history and member of the French School of Rome.

Seduced by the magnificent remains of the house he undertook to restore it, which he did from 1921 to 1923 based on old documents provided by his friend Edouard Aude, curator of the Méjanes library in Aix-en-Provence . All the craftsmen employed in this restoration were from Lourmarin.

Robert Laurent-Vibert disappeared in 1925 in a car accident. By a will drawn up in 1923, he bequeathed the Château to the Académie des Sciences, Agriculture, Arts et Belles Lettres of Aix-en-Provence, which was responsible for setting up a Foundation bearing his name.

Thus was created the Lourmarin Robert Laurent-Vibert Foundation, recognized as being of public utility in 1927, administered by a Board initially made up of friends of Robert Laurent-Vibert.

The missions of this Foundation are cultural. Today they are still fully booked: hosting young artists in residence during the summer, concerts, conferences, exhibitions, throughout the year. The Château de Lourmarin has thus become an important cultural and economic center of the South Luberon. This monument is open to visitors all year round and also offers a number of activities particularly intended for children (treasure hunts visits, Mistouflon visit, Young Writers Competition, Historical Days, etc.).

Le corps le plus ancien du Château a été construit au XVe siècle par Foulques d’Agoult, sur les ruines d’une forteresse du XIIe siècle.
A partir de 1526, Louis d’Agoult-Montauban et son épouse, Blanche de Lévis-Ventadour, firent élever l’aile Renaissance d’une remarquable unité de style.
A la fin du XVIe siècle, l’édifice devient la propriété des Créqui-Lesdiguières, demeurant au Château de La Tour d’Aigues. A partir de cette époque et jusqu’en 1789, le Château n’est occupé que par les intendants qui gèrent les terres. Après la Révolution Française, période durant laquelle il échappe à la destruction, le Château passe entre les mains de divers propriétaires, intéressés surtout par la gestion des terres et qui délaissent le Château. A la fin du XIXe siècle, le Château-Vieux tombe en ruines, l’aile Renaissance qui avait été transformée en grange, servait également de refuge aux vagabonds et gitans de passage.

En 1920, le Château allait être vendu aux enchères pour servir de carrière de pierres. Il fut providentiellement découvert et acquis par Robert Laurent-Vibert, industriel lyonnais, propriétaire des Pétroles Hahn, mais aussi grand érudit, normalien, agrégé d’histoire et membre de l’Ecole française de Rome.

Séduit par les restes magnifiques de la demeure il entreprit de la restaurer, ce qu’il fit de 1921 à 1923 en s’appuyant sur des documents anciens fournis par son ami Edouard Aude, conservateur de la bibliothèque Méjanes d’Aix-en-Provence. Tous les artisans employés à cette restauration étaient lourmarinois.

Robert Laurent-Vibert disparut en 1925 dans un accident de voiture. Par un testament établi en 1923, il avait légué le Château à l’Académie des Sciences, Agriculture, Arts et Belles Lettres d’Aix-en-Provence, à charge pour elle d’instaurer une Fondation portant son nom.

Ainsi fut créée la Fondation de Lourmarin Robert Laurent-Vibert, reconnue d’utilité publique dès 1927, administrée par un Conseil composé dans un premier temps d’amis de Robert Laurent-Vibert.

Les missions de cette Fondation sont d’ordre culturel. Aujourd’hui elles sont encore pleinement remplies : accueil de jeunes artistes en résidence pendant l’été, concerts, conférences, expositions, tout au long de l’année. Le Château de Lourmarin est ainsi devenu un pôle culturel et économique important du Sud Luberon. Ce monument est ouvert toute l’année aux visiteurs et propose aussi de nombreuses animations particulièrement destinées aux enfants (visites Jeux de piste, visite Mistouflon, Concours Jeunes Ecrivains, Journées Historiques ect…).
