This wrought iron door has written "Parish of San Julián de Ferrol 1775" which is the name of the parish, place and date of construction.
"The old Church of San Julián de Ferrol , by means of the bull of Juan XXIII, reached the category of co-cathedral on March 9, 1959. It did not reach that of cathedral because in its same diocese there was already another cathedral, that of Mondoñedo ( Lugo ).
One of its main characteristics is that it does not have a Latin cross plan but a Greek cross plan .
The temple was designed by the marine engineer and architect Julián Sánchez Bort from 1763 and construction began in 1765 on the remains of an old Romanesque church, being completed in 1772. This temple was designed for a new neighborhood that stood in the city of Ferrol. In 1959, by means of a bull of Juan XXIII, it reached the category of co-cathedral on March 9. He was given this title and not that of cathedral because in his diocese there was already one, the Cathedral of Mondoñedo."
