History

One of the old doors of the Ferrol shipyards, built in 1857.
The shipyards, founded in the reign of Felipe V , have been the driving force behind Ferrol ( La Coruña ) and its region for many years . Currently, it is a sector in crisis, but it continues to be one of the points with the greatest industrial capacity (heavy industry) in all of Galicia . After the narrowness of its first location in La Graña, assuming an old project of the engineer Montaigú from 1723, Lieutenant General Cosme Álvarez designed the first Arsenal project in 1747, which was approved in 1750 and modified under the supervision of Jorge Juan , counting with the performances of other notable engineers and architects such as Llobet or Sánchez Bort .

The Ferrol Military Arsenal constitutes the embodiment of the illustrated design: a dock with capacity for 70 ships of the line and its docks, warehouses, workshops ... all works whose magnificence also fulfilled the role of propagating Royal power. The Arsenal would also fulfill its own defensive function and as a citadel of the Plaza de Ferrol as the last stronghold against a possible ground attack. In all its constructions the obsession with the rationalist order is perceived: utility and science.

During the Civil War , from July 1936 to at least April 1939, it served as a concentration camp for Republican prisoners, located in the ships of La Escollera. The ships Contramaestre Casado , Plus Ultra and Genoveva Fierro were also used to confine the detainees. The local press reported executions of prisoners ("for traitors to the Fatherland"), a common practice in this and other Francoist prisons during the conflict, after the holding of very summary trials .

Currently, there are the shipyards of the public company Navantia , specialized in the construction of large warships, as well as the repair of large ships (oil tankers, gas carriers, ferries, etc.)
