Trappistenklooster gesticht in 1831 door enkele paters, afkomstig uit een gelijkaardige orde op de Katsberg, op de plaats van het in 1783 afgeschafte birgittijnenklooster. De priorij van Westvleteren was afhankelijk van de abdij van Westmalle en werd 1871 tot abdij verheven. De brouwerij werd gesticht in 1838.
Ommuurd (voorzien van steunberen) gebouwencomplex bestaande uit slotklooster, kapel en brouwerijgebouwen.
De abdij en brouwerij zijn niet te bezoeken. De geïnteresseerde kan wel terecht in ‘Het Claustrum’, een informatieruimte in het ontmoetingscentrum ‘In de Vrede’, recht tegenover de abdij. Hier bieden de monniken u een inkijk in hun kloosterleven.
Monastère trappiste fondé en 1831 par quelques Pères, issus d'un ordre similaire de ceux du Mont-des-Cats, sur le site de l'abbaye des moines de l'Ordre Birgittin., qui a été supprimée en 1783. Le prieuré de Westvleteren dépendait de l'abbaye de Westmalle et a été élevé au rang d'abbaye en 1871. La brasserie a été fondée en 1838.
Le complexe de bâtiments muré (avec contreforts) comprenant un cloître, une chapelle et des bâtiments de la brasserie.
L’abbaye et la brasserie ne peuvent pas se visiter. Cependant les personnes intéressées peuvent se rendre au ‘Claustrum’ qui est un espace d’information qui se trouve à l’intérieur du Centre de rencontre ‘In de vrede’, en face de l’abbaye. L’accès en est gratuit et les moines vous y invitent à jeter un coup d’oeil sur leur vie monastique.

Trappist monastery founded in 1831 by a few fathers of a similar order to those of Mont des Cats, on the site of the abbey of the monks of the Birgittin Order, which was abolished in 1783. The Westvleteren Priory was part of Westmalle Abbey and was elevated to the rank of abbey in 1871. The brewery was founded in 1838.
The walled building complex (with buttresses) consists of a cloister, a chapel and the brewery buildings.
The abbey and brewery cannot be visited. Those who are interested can, however, go the the ‘Claustrum’. This is an information area in the meeting centre ‘in de Vrede’ right opposite the monastery. Here monks offer you insights into monastic life.
