Ripley is a small rural community in southeastern Payne County, with a population of about 400. Off the northeast corner of their fire department building is a memorial to the fallen New York Fire Department firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Nine-Eleven became the deadliest day in history for U.S. firefighters. On that day, when terrorists flew into the Twin towers in New York City, 2763 people died, including 343 firefighters and paramedics. This white granite monument, shaped like a headstone has the shape of a firefighter shield on it, engraved with the date 9-11-01. It reads:
F. D. N. Y.
