At this location is a plaque commemorating the end of one part of the journey to Salt Lake City and the work to prepare for the 1,000+ mile walk that they were about to start.
The plaque reads:
SOUTH OF THIS BOULDER ON THE
BANKS OF CLEAR CREEK, IS THE
SITE OF THE “MORMON HANDCART
BRIGADE CAMP.” IN 1856 SOME
THIRTEEN HUNDRED EUROPEAN
IMMIGRANTS, CONVERTS TO THE
MORMON FAITH, DETRAINED AT
IOWA CITY. THE END OF THE RAIL-
ROAD. ENCAMPED HERE THEY
HADE HANDCARTS AND EQUIPMENT
FOR THEIR JOURNEY ON FOOT TO
SALT LAKE CITY.
Above the text quoted above is a relief sculpture showing handcarts, men, women, children and one dog.
