Malcolm W. Martin (1912-2004) was a World War II veteran and a prominent St. Louis lawyer. A patron of the arts (he was a trustee of both the St. Louis Symphony and the St. Louis Art Museum) and one involved deeply with civic affairs, he lobbied hard for an expansion of the Gateway National Park on the east side of the Mississippi River (as was originally envisioned by Eero Saarinen, the arch’s designer). Though the National Park was never expanded, Martin did manage to get some land set aside directly opposite of the arch.

In June of 2005, the area was officially dedicated as Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park. It includes a water fountain called the Geyser that “erupts” every day around noon during the summer (weather permitting) and an observation platform to get a better view over the railroad tracks. The statue sits at the top of the platform.
