Ingalls is a small town about 11 miles east of Stillwater. The town was settled after the 1889 Land Run. The town became a mecca for outlaw gangs. The outlaw activities culminated in the September 1, 1893 battle between the Doolin and Daltons gangs and three U.S. Marshalls, resulting in the death of the Marshalls. The town took on a reputation of an outlaw town, and because of this, never grew or flourished. The post office closed in 1907, and today there are just several dilapidated wood buildings left and a few residences.

The following web page from an article in the Edmond Life and Leisure tells a blow-by-blow description of what happened this day. What really happened at Ingalls battle Across the street from three wood relics of the past is this stone pillar approximately 9 ft. high, dedicated to the three Marshalls who died that day. A bronze plaque reads:

In memory of
U. S. MARSHALLS
Dick Speed, Tom Houston
Lafe Shadley
who fell in the line of duty
Sept. 1, 1893
by Dalton and Doolin gang.
