ALERT: Whatever you do - when traveling to the town of Kendrick, be sure to take the County Road 3503 out of Davenport. We approached from the southwest of town, and drove miles on narrow dirt roads which were slowly eroding into the ditches. Could not have made it in wet weather.
The coordinates shown above are at the intersection of Main Street and 3rd, which was once the downtown area. Kendrick was first established in 1902. Originally named Avondale, it was renamed shortly thereafter to Kendrick after a railroad executive. At one point in its past, there was a general store, a hardware and a hotel. Three churches and a newspaper, as well as a cotton gin operated here. Today, there are no commercial businesses and the few buildings in town are vacant and in ruins. There is a community church and a community center. Postal service is offered through the nearby town of Stroud, and children in town go to the Stroud schools. There is a volunteer fire department in operation.
The population in 1920 was 255 and in 1930 it was 270. It has slowly declined over the years with a current population of 142. Residents work in nearby towns. The community center sign indicates the names of a mayor and two trustees who handle the affairs of the town.
