The Kinderhook Reformed Church burial ground was originally located in the center of Kinderhook. In 1817 the citizens of Kinderhook petitioned the state to move the cemetery out of the town. Permission was granted provided all the original graver were re-interred in the new cemetery. In 1818 the first parcel of land was acquired for the new cemetery. Subsequently new additions were added in 1845 and 1858. The west side was added in 1899. The cemetery is still owned and maintained by the Kinderhook Reformed Church.
The most famous burial in the Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery is the 8th President of the United States - Martin Van Buren. A 15' high granite obelisk marks the family plot of the 8th President of the United States - Martin Van Buren and his wife Hannah. The west facing inscription is quite worn so there is a copy of the inscription at the base of the obelisk.
