The fountain, designed by architect Erik Nobel on behalf of the city of Skjern and created by stonemason Charles Vendelbjerg, was inaugurated on July 4, 1996. In the middle of the 6 m diameter fountain is a column made of red Swedish granite with a base area of 70 cm x 70 cm and a height of 4 m. Elements made of a brass alloy (tombac) and corten steel are intended to connect society with the modern world (i.e. railway and technology). There are notches on two sides that symbolize the Skjern River - this is where the water runs along into the fountain basin. At the bottom of the well basin, a compass rose is worked into further granite slabs, the column stands in the middle.
