I recovered this Azimuth mark in good condition as part of the PELICAN bench mark series. This Azimuth mark is located about .25 miles SW of the summit of Pelican Butte. It was easier to recover with a nearby metal witness post.
The NGS datasheet description for the Azimuth mark:
AZIMUTH MARK NO. 1 IS A STANDARD US COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY (NOW NOS) DISK STAMPED---PELICAN 1967---SET INTO THE TOP OF A PARTIALLY EXPOSED BOULDER OF 1.5 METERS (5 FEET) LARGEST DIMENSION LOCATED 91.4 METERS (300 FEET) S FROM THE ROAD LEADING TO THE LOOKOUT TOWER AND 22.9 METERS (75 FEET) NW FROM THE SOUTH END OF HIGHEST PART OF THE LAVA FLOW. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE STATION GO BACK DOWN THE HILL 0.25 TO A BARE, LAVA COVERED AREA. PARK TRUCK AND PACK SOUTHERLY ABOUT 300 FEET TO THE MARK.
Azimuth Condition: Perfect
Your Directions: The NGS datasheet description is adequate for AZ mark recovery. There's a metal witness post that helps to better locate the large boulder that the AZ mark in monumented on.
