This granite statue of Bellerophon riding Pegasus is located in the northwest corner of Carolina's Garden. The statue itself sits within a small brick man-made pond. The statue is one many equestrian or mythical being statues that resides here, though this is the largest. Marker Text: Pegasus Laura Gardin Fraser (1889-1966) Granite, 1946-1954 The largest sculpture at Brookgreen also took the longest to create, it was nearly nine years from inception to completion. A stone carver under the supervision of the sculptor carved the sculpture in Mt. Airy granite. For four years the carver worked here on the stone in order to completed the job. Pegasus, the winged horse of mythology, is an ancient symbol of inspiration. The sculptor designed this work to symbolize the person born with vision and imagination who soars with Pegasus.

Bellerophon from Wikipedia:
Bellerophon or Bellerophontes a is a hero of Greek mythology. He was "the greatest hero and slayer of monsters, alongside Cadmus and Perseus, before the days of Heracles", and his greatest feat was killing the Chimera, a monster that Homer depicted with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail: "her breath came out in terrible blasts of burning flame." He is also known for capturing the winged horse Pegasus with the help of Athena’s charmed bridle, and earning the disfavour of the gods after attempting to ride Pegasus to Mount Olympus to join them.

Pegasus from Wikipedia:
Pegasus is a mythical winged divine horse, and one of the most recognized creatures in Greek mythology. Usually depicted as pure white, Pegasus is the offspring of the Olympian god Poseidon. He was foaled by the Gorgon Medusa upon her death, when the hero Perseus decapitated her. Pegasus is the brother of Chrysaor and the uncle of Geryon.

Pegasus was caught by the Greek hero Bellerophon, near the fountain Peirene, with the help of Athena and Poseidon. Pegasus allowed Bellerophon to ride him in order to defeat the monstrous Chimera, which led to many other exploits. Bellerophon later fell from the winged horse's back while trying to reach Mount Olympus. Afterwards, Zeus transformed Pegasus into the eponymous constellation.
