Wikipedia (

"Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof (Bialystok, December 15, 1859 - Warsaw, April 14, 1917) was a Polish-born ophthalmologist of Jewish origin, polyglot and philologist but became best known as the founder of the international auxiliary language Esperanto. The name of this language comes from his pseudonym Dr. Esperanto.
He was the son of Mordechai Mark Zamenhof and Rozalia Zofer. His mother tongues were Russian, Yiddish and Polish (according to biographers A. Zakrzewski, E. Wiesenfeld) but he was also fluent in German. Later he learned French, Latin, Greek, Hebrew and English, he also had an interest in Italian, Spanish and Lithuanian. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 12 times.[1] On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Zamenhof's death in 2017, UNESCO declared Zamenhof, along with a hundred other personalities, as a deserving international personality. Many streets are named after him."
