Après Sainte Marie, lundi, ce mardi 16 août, les bastiais fêtaient Saint Roch en l’église du même nom, rue Napoléon. Erigé en 1604, cet oratoire possède un décor intérieur remarquable dédié à la gloire de Saint Roch et de Saint Sébastien, tous deux invoqués lors des épidémies de la peste. Le retable architecturé du maître-autel, aux grandes colonnes monolithes, a été sculpté à Bastia en 1692 par le marbrier génois Domenico Saporito.

La table d’autel et les gradins ont été entièrement refaits en 1798. Le tableau du maître-autel, daté de 1626, est signé par le célèbre peintre florentin Giovanni Bilivert. Il représente saint Roch, saint Martin, sainte Catherine d’Alexandrie et saint Sébastien aux pieds de la Vierge à l’Enfant.
Dans la nef, deux niches vitrées contiennent des statues de procession en bois polychrome réalisées par le sculpteur Luigi Griscella. Celle de gauche figure saint Roch, celle de droite, datée de 1801, représente saint Sébastien. Le jour de la fête, le 16 août, des petits pains bénis sont distribués aux fidèles à l'issue de la messe. Ceux-ci ne sont pas consommés mais conservés avec dévotion dans le but d'éloigner du foyer familial épidémies et calamités naturelles.

La confrérie Saint Roch a été fondée en 1588. Tombée dans l’oubli, elle a été recréée il y a une douzaine d’années. Elle est traditionnellement réservée aux adolescents de la paroisse de la ville basse. Adultes, ayant atteint 33 ans, ceux-ci doivent impérativement la quitter pour intégrer une autre confrérie de la ville. La confrérie de Saint Roch apparait ainsi comme un véritable « centre de formation » des confréries de Corse.
Comme chaque année, la Saint Roch a été fêté dans la ferveur avec deux messes, une conférence sur « Le grand tableau d’autel de Giovanni Bilivert : histoire et restauration » donnée par Michel-Édouard Nigaglioni, directeur du Patrimoine ( voir à ce sujet notre reportage du 23 juin : http://www.corsenetinfos.corsica/Bastia-Restauration-du-tableau-de-Giovanni-Bilivert-a-l-Oratoire-Saint-Roch_a21922.html) et la traditionnelle procession dans les rues proches de l’église.
