Ebenezer Cemetery is a small rural cemetery north of Highway 24, east of Clay Center. Ebenezer Scrooge is familiar to us as the antagonist of Charles Dickens' novella A Christmas Story but the name comes from I Samuel. After a decisive victory against the Philistines, Samuel erected a monument to commemorate the occasion. "Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, 'Thus far the LORD has helped us.'" - I Samuel 7:12. Thus, the word means "stone of help."
Bible verse: I Samuel 7:12
