The estuary is an important area to wildlife and because it is tidal provides a wide variety of changing environments particularly for the visiting birdlife.
It has been designated a protected wildlife site and an internationally important site for wildlife (not only for birds).
It has also been notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest under Section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
The small car park provides easy access and a public footpath follows the route of the estuary, but also keeps people a safe distance, not only from areas of deep mud, but also to minimise disturbance of the wildlife.
The footpath is also the route of the Long Distance walking, cycling and in some parts horse riding trail, The Trans Pennine Trail. This path connects the east coast of England at Hornsea with the West Coast at Southport.
