The sign says, "The seat of the Catholic Carrols of Annapolis, the Charles Carroll House was the primary urban residence of its most famous owner, Charles Carroll of Carrollton. The site bears great historical significance to the state of Maryland and America s the home of Charles Carroll the Settler, first Attorney General of Maryland, his son, Charles Carroll of Annapolis and his grandson, Charles Carroll of Carrolton.

When Carroll of Carrollton began transforming the property in 1770, he created a formal garden that rivaled any in Annapolis at that time. it has been documented that geometry provided the foundation for planning of the garden with features placed in measured geometric patterns. The garden is designed as a 3-4-5 right triangle with Duke of Gloucester Street being the hypotenuse. its shape, defined by the waterfront, is a contrast from the more common rectangle shape of other urban gardens in Annapolis such as the Paca and Ridout gardens.

Catholic Signer

Faced with both persecution and restrictions for his faith, Charles Carroll of Carrolton secured his families vision of personal, political, and religion freedom for all citizens when he back the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776."
