The Longreach Powerhouse began operating in 1921 and was decommissioned in 1985 when the central west became part of the state grid. The powerhouse was opened as the Longreach Powerhouse Museum in September 1994.
The powerhouse comprises a series of large, interconnected, corrugated galvanised iron sheds of a sawn timber frame construction. Included within this structure are the engine room , gas producer room, workshop and amenities area.Ten engine sets and gas producers are located within the engine and gas producer rooms.
