At over 1000 miles long, the Snake River is one of the longest rivers in the U.S. Several sections of this river have been designated as “wild and scenic” to protect its free-flowing nature and scenic beauty for posterity. One of these sections is in the Hell’s Canyon area that forms the border between Idaho and Oregon. The other area where sections of the Snake River have been protected is known as the Snake River Headwaters in northwest Wyoming.

The view of the Snake River on the stamp is located in this latter area, specifically at the confluence of the Snake River with the Buffalo Fork (which has also been designated as “wild and scenic”). The mountains which form the backdrop to the river are part of the Teton Range. The entire scene on the stamp is within the confines of the Grand Teton National Park.
