Due to Covid, the base was not open to visitors. However, this will likely change any week now. When I visited on 20 June 2021, it was not open to visitors yet.
Taken from the website, "The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center of the U.S. Naval Academy is introducing a new narrated riding tour. “A GEM of a Tour” begins and ends at the Visitor Center with one hour and 15 minutes of viewing, including many sites not on the guided walking tour.
Riders will see and hear about Bancroft Hall, the student dormitory; Buchanan House, home of the Superintendent; Main Chapel; and the USNA Museum. Also included are attractions never before seen on Academy tours, such as the parade grounds, Alumni Hall, Cemetery, and the Jeanette Monument (1891), which is dedicated to the crew of 20 out of 33 who died while exploring Artic Ice between 1879 and 1881.
On the other side of the Yard (as the Academy grounds are known), riders will see sports complexes, the Jewish Chapel and monuments and memorials along the Severn River seawall. Most prominent are the Triton Light and the foremast of the USS MAINE, called “the longest ship in the Navy,” because the main mast is located at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, 36 miles from the Academy.
A GEM of a Tour will depart from the USNA Visitor Center on Saturdays from April 22 through October 28 at 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person, including a bottle of water and a souvenir postcard book. The five passenger GEM electric car tour requires two passengers minimum.
Call 410-293-8112 to book. Full payment must be made by noon the preceding Thursday. For more information on the Visitor Center and Naval Academy tours, visit www.usnabsd.com/for-visitors.
Cancellation for refund must be made two business days in advance."
