Postage stamps featuring the American flag have been perennially available for over fifty years. When postage rates increased in 1981, three flag stamps were produced featuring lines from the popular song “America the Beautiful.” This one, with the inscription “…for purple mountain majesties,” shows the Teton Range in western Wyoming as seen from the south near the town of Jackson.

The Teton Range extends for about 40 miles in a north-south direction. The highest peak, named Grand Teton, has an elevation of 13,775 ft. On the east side, the mountains rise abruptly from the valley below making them extremely photogenic. They have appeared on several postage stamps as well as calendars, post cards, films and travel brochures. In 1929, the area was designated a National Park.
