The National Wild and Scenic River System was established by an act of Congress in 1968 to preserve certain rivers with natural and/or cultural significance in a free-flowing condition for posterity. In 1991, a 76-mile section of the Niobrara River in north central Nebraska was added to the Wild and Scenic River System. (Another section in Knox County, NE was added a little later.)

This section of the Niobrara is a popular destination for tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other recreational activities. The Niobrara National Scenic River is administered by the National Park Service who maintain a visitor’s center in Valentine, Nebraska. The scene on the stamp shows the river from a bluff on the south bank about a mile west of the Berry Bridge.
