Tucked away in the lush green (lush brown in the summer) rolling hills of Calabasas, California, the ten landscaped acres of the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park provide a serene and peaceful resting place for over 40,000 animal companions. Any one driving north on highway 101 out of Los Angeles can not miss the huge "L.A. Pet Park" sign on the hillside.

Originally called the Los Angeles Pet Cemetery, the park was founded and dedicated on September 4, 1928. It is, therefore, one of the oldest facilities of its kind on the West Coast. Recognizing the need for decent and dignified pet burials, the Rollins and Dr. Eugene Jones family owned and operated the facility for more than forty years.
In 1973, the family graciously donated the cemetery to the Los Angeles SPCA. After managing the park for a decade, the SPCA considered selling the property to developers.
A small group of pet owners learned of this and established S.O.P.H.I.E., Inc. ("Save Our Pets' History in Eternity"), a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to the preservation of this beautiful sanctuary. S.O.P.H.I.E. members initiated a fund-raising drive to purchase the grounds and lobbied at the State Legislature in Sacramento to enact the first-ever state law to protect pet cemeteries.
On September 12, 1986, S.O.P.H.I.E. closed escrow and dedicated the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in perpetuity.
