The Teton Range rises abruptly from the Jackson Hole valley below. The lack of foothills on its eastern slopes makes this one of the most photogenic mountain ranges in America. The highest peak is known as Grand Teton and has an elevation of 13775 ft. Grand Teton National Park was established in 1929 and included the mountain peaks and some lakes. Eventually, with the help of John D. Rockefeller Jr., it was expanded to include a good portion of the valley as well.

The view on the stamp is from the Snake River Overlook along highway 191. It’s the same view that’s on the current park brochure. At least five different U.S. stamp designs feature views of the Teton Range but so far, this is the only one that mentions them by name.
