The mission of the American Farmland Trust is to protect farmland, promote sound farming practices, and keep farmers on the land. In view of this mission the American Farmland Trust, in partnership with Northampton Arts Council, and the real estate management company of Icarus, Wheaten and Finch, commissioned this mural which was designed by Michael Crigler and painted by Ramiro Davaro-Comas.
The mural is set in on a Northampton farm. Northampton is represented by three iconic buildings in the upper part of the mural: The Academy of Music, City Hall and the Herrick Mill building. Below, on farmland, is a man and a woman. The woman is digging a hole while the man is holding a plant. A barn is inscribed with the message: NO FARMS NO FOOD. A tractor, a couple of cows, and a hot air balloon complete the scene.
