[EN] An explosive fire destroyed the Mini-Hinta department store in Turku in November 1983. The store, which was described as an American-style discount department store, had only been opened a few days earlier. The fire ignited by the pyromaniac spread furiously and in less than an hour the whole building had collapsed. The two firefighters who were shopping had time to evacuate the other customers in time.
The fire, which began at 1.25 pm on Friday, 11 November 1983, progressed vigorously and in less than an hour the department store had collapsed into the street. Within an hour and a half, the house next door, one apartment and three storeys were destroyed, and the warehouses of nearby commercial apartments were damaged. The traffic was in chaos and there were crashes in heavy smoke.
To save the customers of Mini-Hinta, the prompt action of the two firefighters who were shopping in the store at the time of the fire was caused. The firefighters on duty, along with the movement’s staff, managed to evacuate people out through the front doors and roof before the building collapsed.
The post-fire work lasted well until the next day, when the man suspected of arson had already been arrested.
The fire set on fire by pyromaniac claimed one victim when the head of the Turku Volunteer Fire Brigade had a seizure during the extinguishing work and died later.
The fire was a really big task for the firefighters to get under control. Even today, the ignition and extinguishing of this fire have been mentioned on the website of the Southwest Finland Fire Department.

[FIN] Räjähdysmäinen tulipalo tuhosi Turussa Mini-Hinta-tavaratalon maan tasalle marraskuussa 1983. Amerikkalaistyyppiseksi alennustavarataloksi luonnehdittu liike oli avattu vain muutama päivä aiemmin. Pyromaanin sytyttämä palo levisi raivoisasti ja alle tunnissa koko rakennus oli romahtanut. Ostoksilla olleet kaksi palomiestä ehtivät evakuoimaan muut asiakkaat ajoissa ulos.
"Tämä tuhoutunut amerikkalaistyylinen Mini-Hinta-tavaratalo oli kauppatapansa mukaisesti todella täynnä tavaraa viidessä kerroksessa. Niinpä kun tulipalo pääsi alkuun, se levisi räjähdysmäisesti", aloittaa toimittaja Simo Pasanen uutisraporttinsa Mini-Hinnan tulipalosta.
Perjantaina 11.11.1983 klo 13.25 alkanut palo eteni voimallisesti ja vajaassa tunnissa tavaratalo oli romahtanut kadulle. Puolessatoista tunnissa tuhoutui käyttökelvottomaksi viereinenkin talo, yksi asuinhuoneisto ja kolme varastokerrosta, ja lähistön liikehuoneistojen varastot kärsivät vahinkoja. Liikenne oli kaaoksessa ja sankassa savussa sattui peltikolareitakin.
Mini-Hinnan asiakkaiden pelastukseksi koitui kaupassa syttymishetkellä ostoksilla olleiden kahden palomiehen ripeä toiminta. Vapaavuorolla olleet palomiehet onnistuivat yhdessä liikkeen henkilökunnan kanssa evakuoimaan ihmiset ulos ulko-ovien ja katon kautta ennen rakennuksen romahtamista.
Jälkisammutustyöt kestivät pitkälle seuraavaan päivään, jolloin tuhopolttajaksi epäilty mieskin oli jo otettu kiinni.
Pyromaanin sytyttämä palo vaati yhden uhrin, kun Turun VPK:n päällikkö sai sammutustöissä sairaskohtauksen ja menehtyi myöhemmin.
Tulipalo oli palomiehille todella suuri tehtävä saada hallintaan. Vielä nykyäänkin on tämän tulipalon syttymistä ja sammutustöitä mainittu Lounais-Suomen Pelastuslaitoksen sivuilla.
