Denton Record Chronicle"Denton police were called to the scene in the 500 block of South Locust Street between 6 and 6:30 p.m., department spokesman Brian Cose said.
Both the store clerk and the suspect were injured when officers arrived, Cose said.
Police arrested Jose Lago, 48, for aggravated robbery after he was taken to the hospital with laceration wounds. The store clerk was also driven to the hospital with laceration wounds. As of Tuesday morning, the clerk's condition was unknown.
Bishnu Bhetwal, the store’s owner, said he and his clerks knew the suspect, a frequent visitor to the store who works at a nearby business.
“He comes in 20 times a day,” Bhetwal said.
Sometimes the man came in for a beer, but had no money. His clerks would sometimes give him a beer and let him pay them back later.
Bhetwal’s son was working in the store earlier in the day when the suspect came in the first time on Monday, Bhetwal said.
He said another of his longtime employees, Rajendra Khandia, was working the counter Monday evening when the suspect came back in and tried to rob the store.
“He stabbed my guy,” Bhetwal said. “He’s hurt.”
He said Khandia couldn’t believe the man was trying to rob the store and chased him out. Even though the man had a knife, Khandia overpowered him and managed to take the keys to his car, Bhetwal said.
He said he believed someone from across the street saw the confrontation unfold and called police.
Bhetwal, who lives in Argyle, has owned Zoom-Zooms for about 15 years. He said he’s had a lot of trouble with robberies in the past four or five years.
“This is the seventh time they’ve robbed my store,” Bhetwal said."
