The history of the First Church of Christ, Congregational dates back to the establishment of Pittsfield in 1791. The original church was replaced with a Federal style building designed by Charles Bulfinch which also functioned as the town's meeting house. This church was destroyed in a fire in 1851. Architect Leopold Eidlitz was then commissioned to design the present Gothic Revival style church which was completed in 1853. The present stone church retains some of the elements of the design of the Bulfinch church, such as the bell and clock tower on the east side of the church.
The main block of the church has a gable roof and an entrance within a pointed arch which is flanked by two lancet windows. Above the entrance is a triple set of Gothic style stained glass windows. At the apex beneath the gable is a circular window with a cross design. The west side of the church has a extension which is one bay wide with an entrance on the ground level and a lancet window on the second level. The sides of the building are four bays deep with each with dormers extending from the roof. The clock and bell tower has an entrance on the ground level, a pair of narrow rectangular window, one above the other, a clock, and a belfry on top with louvered windows. The tower is topped with a cross gable roof.
