"The building bears the title of "Hôtel de Ville" - although Saint-Gilles is a municipality and not a city - due to the existence of the fort of Monterey (although demolished for a long time) which had fortifications and therefore gave the right for the municipality to call itself "city".

The old town hall, located Parvis de Saint-Gilles, having become too small at the end of the 19th century, the municipal council decided in 1896 to build a new building on the site of an old sand quarry to the south of the commune. An architectural competition is organized and Albert Dumont's project for a French neo-Renaissance building is chosen from among more than twenty applications.

The first stone was laid in September 1900 and the town hall was inaugurated on July 24, 1904. At a cost of around three million francs, the amount was twice as high as initially planned. In 1988, the building was classified as a protected monument. The exterior was completely restored between 1990 and 2002.

The building occupies an area of ??4,267 m2 and consists of two curved wings that “embrace” visitors, so to speak. The richly decorated coating is made of noble materials: a base in pink granite from the Vosges, sandstone from Savonnières and Euville, bricks from Boom and blue stone.

L'extérieur est entièrement restauré entre 1990 et 2002.

Le bâtiment occupe une surface de 4 267 m2 et se compose de deux ailes courbes qui « embrassent » les visiteurs, pour ainsi dire. Le revêtement richement décoré est composé de matériaux nobles : un socle en granit rose des Vosges, du grès de Savonnières et d'Euville, des briques de Boom et de la pierre bleue."
